Aim
Reading and literature didactics builds on subject-specific knowledge of literary studies and subject-specific didactic concepts also in the context of German as a second language. This course focuses on reading analogue and digital media as well as the use of children’s and youth literature. Special attention is paid to individual learning starting points, different types of texts and learning environments, and materials appropriate to the target group. The students get to know IKM plus including support materials and acquire the skills to use the results for planning effective learning opportunities and for designing differentiated lessons.
Content
- Fundamentals of literary studies (concept of literature, literature in historical change, literature and media)
- Areas of competence of reading and systematic didactics of reading (from reading motivation to reading skills and reading strategies to reading comprehension)
- Subject-specific knowledge and subject-specific didactic concepts for differentiated, gender-appropriate reading, and literature didactics in German as a first and second language
- Target group appropriate (literary) reading texts/textbooks/materials for lessons
- Reading strategies and the teaching of these in dealing with literary as well as non-fiction and utility texts, especially also multimodal and non-linear texts and the possible applications of these in the classroom
- Standardised remedial diagnostic procedures for language and reading screenings
- Reading and language-supporting learning environments and creative handling of current children’s and youth literature in an (inter-)cultural context
- Addressing literacy concepts in the context of heterogeneous groups and German as a second language
- Linking of reading and developmentally appropriate writing in the interaction of analogue and digital media
- Informal competence measurement (IKM plus) as an instrument for recording subject-related and interdisciplinary competences of students and for their comparison across Austria

The graduates ...
- are familiar with basic characteristics of literature and are able to convey the historical changeability of literature and media
- are familiar with the process levels and areas of competence of reading and their interaction and can differentiate between them in lessons
- can implement subject didactic concepts of reading promotion in the first and second language German and design gender-appropriate, individualised, and differentiated learning arrangements
- are able to select, analyse, and evaluate literary texts, teaching materials, and textbooks for reading/literature lessons and use them in a target group- and learning goal-oriented manner
- can teach interdisciplinary reading strategies for information retrieval in dealing with literary and non-fiction texts, especially multimodal and non-linear texts
- are familiar with different standardised support diagnostic procedures for language and reading screenings
- are familiar with diagnosis-guided support concepts and plans on the basis of current research
- can develop reading-promoting learning environments and ideas for the creative use of current children’s and youth literature in an (inter)cultural context and specifically promote the vocabulary of the children
- are able to deal with the literacy concept and the literary socialisation of children and to respond to it against the background of heterogeneity and German as a second language in the classroom
- can plan teaching and learning processes supported by analogue and digital media as well as learning and interdisciplinary projects from a subject-didactic point of view and support (also including the multimedia school library) and evaluate them.
